Letter Writing Tips

Letters to Elected Officials

One of the most effective ways of contacting your legislator is by sending a personal letter or e-mail to their attention.  Letters do make a difference!  Policy makers want to hear from constituents about issues important to them; all it takes are 10-20 handwritten letters to draw their attention to an issue.

If you're new to this kind of writing, here are some general tips for writing a letter to your legislator:

  • No more than one page.
  • No more than one issue
  • Be specific about the bill/issue you are writing about.
  • Let them know you are a constituent.
  • Let them know if you voted for them or donated money to their campaign.
  • Don't be afraid to be assertive--their job is to represent your interests.
  • Personalize the issue; say WHY it is important to you.
  • Be timely.
  • Use your credentials--if you are an expert, say it!
