Emergency Contraception Available to All Women for $5 During May
Planned Parenthood offers discount during Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month
CHAMPAIGN- Planned Parenthood of East Central Illinois (PPECI) will offer Plan B emergency contraception during the month of May for $5 per dose. A single dose of Plan B typically costs between $30 and $50 at a pharmacy.
“We want to make sure that all women have access to affordable reproductive health care,” says Robin Beach, vice president and chief operating officer at Planned Parenthood of East Central Illinois. “We decided to offer EC at a discounted price to make this method of back up birth control more affordable for teens and other women during Teen Pregnancy Prevention month this May.”
Emergency contraception will be available for $5 at all six Planned Parenthood of East Central Illinois health centers through May 31, 2007. Health centers are located in Bloomington, Champaign, Clinton, Lincoln, Effingham, and Ottawa. The $5 offer applies only for females. Women seeking emergency contraception do not need to be patients at Planned Parenthood of East Central Illinois. No appointment is needed to take advantage of the discounted pricing on emergency contraception.
Emergency contraception, or EC, is simply a high dose of the hormones contained in regular birth control pills. EC lowers the risk of pregnancy when started within 120 hours of unprotected intercourse. The sooner EC is administered after unprotected intercourse, the better it work to prevent pregnancy and back up regular methods of birth control. Studies show that women do not use EC as a regular method of birth control.
