Did you know chlamydia is one of the most common STDs? And that it often goes undiagnosed? Untreated chlamydia is one of the leading causes of preventable infertility. In spite of the CDCs recommendation of routine screening, many women are not tested. The CDC estimates that more than half of new cases remain undiagnosed and unreported. African-American women are especially affected – young black women aged 15-24 have the highest chlamydia rates of any group.
Untreated chlamydia can cause pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) – which can lead to infertility, chronic pain, and ectopic pregnancy. Chlamydia is also associated with an increased risk of HIV infection. The estimated cost of treating chlamydia complications among women in the U.S. exceeds $2 billion per year! For every $1 spent on screening and prevention, we save $12 in reduced costs from complications.
We can’t afford to ignore the cost and consequences of chlamydia and other STDs – stand with Planned Parenthood and ensure millions of women have access to the affordable screenings that they need to stay healthy.
“I have used Planned Parenthood services for the last 12 years. They have provided me with annual screenings for cancer and STDs. There were years I couldn’t afford to pay for these services, and Planned Parenthood was always there to help me…. The staff at Planned Parenthood educated me about STDs and ways to protect myself when no one else would.”
