Education Information The education department at Planned Parenthood of Central Washington takes incredible pride in that we help people protect themselves from risky behaviors that can endanger their lives. PPCW’s education department is progressive by providing the latest and most up to date medically accurate information available to the communities that we serve. We are experts at providing age appropriate and medically accurate information to all. Our community educators are trained to teach on an individual basis or in a group setting; and we boast more than 34 years of experience within our team. A few of the most popular topics we present are healthy relationships and communication, teen pregnancy prevention and goal setting, birth control methods and sexually transmitted infection prevention.
Multi-Session Programs Research suggests that in order to successfully promote behavior change, multi session programs are required (Kirby, 2004). In following the latest research PPCW’s education department has developed a series of multi session programs to meet the diverse needs of our communities. Recent additions to this series of programs include: Love Doesn’t Have to Hurt – a 10 session program aimed at preventing teen dating violence, Faith in Action – an 18 week program that partners with local faith based organizations with the intent of decreasing risky behaviors by delaying the onset of sexual activity and teaching skills that will reduce transmission of sexually transmitted disease and unintended pregnancy, Mother / Daughter Workshops – a ten session program that looks at increasing communication between mothers and daughters about such topics as pregnancy prevention, decision making and the effects of teen pregnancy, and finally Parent Education – a quarterly group that meets to discuss how to effectively speak to our children about sex and sexuality issues (see below for a more in depth description of this program).
The seasoned education department at PPCW can meet the needs of any community based organization. Don’t hesitate to contact us if you see a need for education in your classroom, community based organization, club or church.
Resources for Parents – The one big talk about the birds and the bees??????
How many times did you have to teach your child to look both ways before they crossed the street, and they actually did it? Sexuality education is no different- there is no such thing as ONE BIG TALK! Planned Parenthood of Central Washington believes that parents need to be the primary source of sexuality education for their children. However, data demonstrates that most parents are not providing the comprehensive education that children need to keep themselves safe from harm. Research shows that the children whose parents talk to them consistently and often have later onset of sexual activity, lower rates of unintended pregnancy and less transmission of sexually transmitted infections.
We understand how difficult it can be to start and continue open discussions about sex and sexuality with your children, This is why our educators are available to teach parents how to facilitate conversations with children in a comfortable setting. |
