Our History
Planned Parenthood of Central North Carolina, Inc. (PPCNC), an affiliate of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, was founded in 1982 by a group of five retired women who were committed to the Planned Parenthood mission.
Our CEO, Janet Colm, has been with the affiliate since it was founded. Our first health center, in Hillsborough, N.C., opened in 1983 and moved to Chapel Hill in 1984. In 1991 we expanded medical services into neighboring Durham County. In 1998, we completed a successful $2 million capital campaign, built a state of the art facility in Chapel Hill and began providing first trimester abortion services. In 2000 we significantly expanded our focus on advocacy by forming the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, a separately incorporated 501(c)4 organization that lobbies and engages in electoral work.
Two years ago we were one of a handful of affiliates selected to participate in a major gifts collaborative project with our national organization. In 2001 we provided the leadership that resulted in our state being selected as one of 15 target states for the nationwide Planned Parenthood Mobilizing to Win Campaign, which is providing substantial financial resources through the Power the Promise campaign to increase grassroots organizing in our state. And, in July 2002, our national organization approved our request to expand our service area into 23 additional counties in central NC. As a first step towards serving these counties, we opened an education and advocacy office in Cumberland County in the fall of 2003.
