Abortion Services
Central Ohio Women's Center, an affiliate of Planned Parenthood of Central Ohio, provides surgical abortions up to 12 weeks and 6 days by ultrasound, and medical abortions up to and including 56 days. Patients may choose traditional D&C abortion, with either local anesthesia or intravenous sedation, or medical abortion with the abortion pill, mifepristone.
We charge $400 for an abortion with local anesthesia, and $475 for an abortion using the abortion pill. $150 must be paid at the time of the education visit. Payment must be made by money order or credit card. We accept Cigna, Medical Mutual, Anthem, and United Healthcare insurance. Discounts are available, based on household size and income. Please discuss this with a staff member at the education visit.
General Information Abortions are performed at COWC using modern equipment in our state-of-the-art Health Center. The procedure takes just a few minutes. Patients are then carefully observed in the recovery room until they are able to leave.
An average patient visit lasts about two to four hours. Patients are given information on post-operative care and how to contact Health Center personnel 24 hours a day if necessary. A method of birth control and arrangements for ongoing contraceptive services are available.
Requirements and Consent COWC complies with all requirements set forth by Ohio state law. It also meets the exacting standards set for abortion services by Planned Parenthood Federation of America. COWC encourages parental involvement and complies with the law requiring parental consent or Judicial Bypass for minors (age 17 and younger) seeking an abortion. If you are under the age of 18 and want to have an abortion without your parents' consent, we can give you information about Judicial Bypass during your education visit.
What to Expect The first visit is called an education. The education visit lasts about two hours and includes:
- Education about pregnancy and birth control options.
- State of Ohio brochures and other required information.
- Lab work as needed, including pregnancy and blood tests.
- Ultrasound.
- Informed consents and medical history.
- A face-to-face meeting with a physician in which the risks of the procedure will be explained. The law requires a 24-hour waiting period between the physician visit and the procedure.
Surgical Abortion Traditional D&C abortion is available with either local anesthesia or intravenous sedation. Local anesthesia is similar to Novocain and is injected by the doctor into the cervix to numb the area. IV sedation is a medication given by a nurse anesthetist through the patient's vein. IV sedation helps a woman relax and may cause drowsiness or decreased awareness. Outpatient surgery and post-operative observation lasts approximately two to four hours and includes:
- Pre-operative medications and monitoring of vital signs
- Testing for chlamydia and gonorrhea, if requested
- Local anesthesia or IV sedation
- A 5- to 10-minute abortion procedure using vacuum aspiration
- Observation in recovery room
- Follow-up care with 24-hour contact information
Medical Abortion The first medication, mifepristone, is taken orally. You will be given four tablets of misoprostol to take the next day. You should expect to experience cramping and bleeding as part of the abortion process. About 90% of women abort within 1-24 hours of inserting the misoprostol. It is also possible that you may have some nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, or chills and fever. A follow-up visit to check on your progress is required.
