Our History: 1980 - 1999

1982: The Asbury Park clinic relocates to larger quarters at Jersey Shore Medical Center. The first self-sustaining clinic opens in Matawan.

1984: PPMC goes to court to restrain the illegal activities of picketers.

1989: PPMC experiences Operation Rescue blockades with as many as 500 protestors in our parking lot.

1992: Services are expanded to include colposcopy and cryotherapy.

PPMC testifies to support a state bill to protect clinic staff and patients from harassment and violence.

PPMC joins with other New Jersey affiliates to form the Planned Parenthood Action Network.

1994:  PPMC begins treating and counseling male clients for sexually transmitted infections.

1994-1995: PPMC merges with Planned Parenthood League of Middlesex County to form Planned Parenthood of Central New Jersey (PPCNJ).  Following the merger, PPCNJ operates seven health centers located in Freehold, Hazlet, Shrewsbury, Neptune, Spotswood, Perth Amboy, and New Brunswick.

1995: PPCNJ participates in the clinical trials of mifepristone (RU-486).

1998: As lead plaintiff, PPCNJ is victorious over the so-called partial birth abortion ban in New Jersey – a bill that actually would have prohibited most abortion procedures at all stages of pregnancy.

PPCNJ establishes its first VOX group.
