1971: Expanding to meet the increasing demand for services, the agency moves to larger quarters in Red Bank. New programs are added: options counseling, pregnancy testing and community outreach activities. Day sessions are established in Freehold.
1972: Red Bank office begins offering family planning services.
1975: The agency purchases 69 E. Newman Springs Road in Shrewsbury as its new headquarters and clinic.
1976-1977: Extensive research establishes a clear need for abortion services in Monmouth County. Testimony is given before the Health Planning Council to obtain a certificate of need to provide first trimester abortions at the Shrewsbury facility. Despite the evidence, the Borough of Shrewsbury denies variance. Following legal action by the agency the decision is reversed in Appellate Court.
1978: Abortion services begin, ensuring continuity of care for clients. For the next 25 years, we will be the only Planned Parenthood abortion provider in the state.
1979: Anti-choice groups begin to picket the agency regularly. Demanding equal time in schools, these individuals begin observing programs conducted by the agency’s educators.
