Planned Parenthood Statement on President Obama Signing Bill to Repeal the Ban on Gays in the Military
Statement by Cecile Richards, President of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, on President Barack Obama Signing Bill to Repeal the Ban on Gays in the Military
“Planned Parenthood applauds President Obama and Congress for repealing the discriminatory ban against gays in the military. This bill is a milestone in civil rights history and will allow gays and lesbians to serve in the military with dignity.
“Most importantly, this repeal will strengthen our armed forces and make our country safer.
“Planned Parenthood supports the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community by providing unbiased, quality health care and information that helps all patients fully understand their sexual orientation and gender identity. Every person deserves honest information and health care because it is central to self-understanding and how one relates to others. Equal rights supported by the government serve to lessen discrimination and allow individuals the opportunity to fulfill the dreams and aspirations they have in life."
Planned Parenthood is the nation’s leading sexual and reproductive health care provider and advocate. We believe that everyone has the right to choose when or whether to have a child, and that every child should be wanted and loved. Planned Parenthood affiliates operate more than 825 health centers nationwide, providing medical services and sexuality education for millions of women, men, and teenagers each year. We also work with allies worldwide to ensure that all women and men have the right and the means to meet their sexual and reproductive health care needs.
