Speaker Pelosi, Congresswoman DeLauro and Senator Stabenow to Receive Special Awards

Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) honors House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT), and Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) today with the Champion of Women’s Health Award for their commitment to expanding health care coverage to millions of American women and ensuring that they have access to the preventive health care that they need and deserve.  The Champion of Women’s Health Award is a brand-new honor that was created by Planned Parenthood to mark the landmark victory of health care reform becoming law in March 2010.

“Every day, millions of women across the country struggle to decide whether to put food on the table for their kids or use the money for a checkup.  The cost of basic health care is extraordinary for those without health insurance and even for many with health insurance,” said PPFA President Cecile Richards.  “With their steadfast commitment to passing health care reform and making sure that women will be able to get the health care they need, the women leaders we honor today set the course to change the lives of millions of women for generations to come.”

As the first female Speaker of the House, Rep. Nancy Pelosi was instrumental in the passage of the historic health care reform legislation.  During the health care reform debate she led her female colleagues in Congress as they stood strong against attempts to insert the Stupak abortion ban into the bill.  Against tremendous odds, she delivered the necessary 219 votes to send the bill to President Obama’s desk.

Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro has been a leading champion for women's health for more than 20 years.  Her leadership was crucial when she took charge of the months-long whip effort against the Stupak abortion ban in the House.  Alongside Speaker Pelosi, she refused to let women's health care be gutted in exchange for the votes to pass the final health care reform bill.  DeLauro is also a leading member of the House Appropriations Committee, where she works to pass legislation that ensures preventive health care is affordable and accessible.

"The passage of health care has shown that we can accomplish great things as a nation, that we can make this country we love a kinder, more compassionate, and more humane place for all our people.  But we have also seen that those who would take away women's right to reproductive choice are very committed and will keep pressing forward," said Congresswoman DeLauro. "We need to keep fighting for women, fighting for change, and pushing back against those who would take us backward. I am honored and humbled today by this award, which truly belongs to every woman who has worked so hard to get to where we are today."

Senator Debbie Stabenow was a key player in the fight for meaningful health care reform and the leader for quality women’s health care on the Senate Finance Committee.  She worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure that every version of the bill included the state option to expand Medicaid Family Planning, which is a critical step in helping women and their families access the preventive care they need.  And when anti-choice Senator Jon Kyl complained about coverage for maternity care because he would never need it, Senator Stabenow kindly reminded him that his mother probably would have felt differently.

“Health care reform is a real victory for the women of our country. Women make most of the health care decisions, but often get charged more for less coverage or can’t get coverage for their health needs at all,” said Stabenow. “I’m proud that the bill we passed will change that. I’m honored to be recognized by Planned Parenthood as a Champion of Women’s Health, and I will continue to work toward a health care system that gives all women access to the services they need.”

Planned Parenthood celebrates the law that dramatically increases access to the health care that so many women and families across the country need and those that made this law a reality. Speaker Pelosi, Senator Stabenow, and Congresswoman DeLauro stood up for women’s health and in doing so, made America healthier, stronger and more productive.
