Planned Parenthood: House Bill is "Remarkably Desperate, Misguided, and Extreme Attack on Women’s Health"

WASHINGTON, DC – Tonight, the House will vote on an amendment that would delay the Affordable Care Act until 2015 and would significantly roll back the birth control benefit in the law. Under the ACA, insurance plans must cover prescription birth control without a co-pay – a key benefit that millions of insured women have already begun to receive and millions more will receive in the months ahead.

Following is a statement from Dawn Laguens, Executive Vice President of Planned Parenthood Federation of America:

“This is a remarkably desperate, misguided, and extreme attack on women’s health that would take away health coverage for millions of women. The country wants Congress to focus on jobs and the economy, not on pushing an extreme agenda against birth control.

“Thanks to the birth control benefit in the Affordable Care Act, millions of women have already begun to get birth control pills, IUDs, and implants for free, without any co-pay, and millions more women will get this benefit over the next several months. Birth control is basic, preventive health care for women.”

Planned Parenthood is the nation’s leading provider and advocate of high-quality, affordable health care for women, men, and young people, as well as the nation’s largest provider of sex education. With nearly 750 health centers across the country, Planned Parenthood organizations serve all patients with care and compassion, with respect and without judgment.
