WASHINGTON – Planned Parenthood Federation of America President Cecile Richards released this statement following comments today by President Obama’s senior economic advisor, Gene Sperling, that the president will not support any cuts to the Medicaid program:

“This is welcome news for the millions of hardworking women and families who are able to get basic preventive health care like cancer screenings thanks to Medicaid.  Right now, one in ten American women gets her health care through Medicaid, letting her choose her own health care provider.  Many of these women visit Planned Parenthood health centers– and for many of them, Planned Parenthood doctors and nurses are the only health care providers they see all year.  President Obama understands that for millions of women, cuts to this program could mean the difference between getting cancer screenings and birth control, or going without.

“We applaud the president’s commitment to protecting access to health care for hardworking women and families.  Our nation's budget problems will not be solved on the backs of those who can least afford it.”
