Planned Parenthood Global Selected by World Food Prize Laureate to Receive Donation
Biotechnologist and Planned Parenthood Supporter Mary-Dell Chilton, PhD, will be honored Thursday evening at the World Food Prize Laureate Award Ceremony at the Iowa State Capitol Building in Des Moines, an event expected to draw over 800 people from more than 75 countries.
Dr. Chilton is one of three scientists to receive the 2013 World Food Prize. For her part, Dr. Chilton has selected Planned Parenthood Global, the international arm of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, to receive one-third of the $250,000 prize.
“Planned Parenthood Global helps to ensure that women, men and young people in the world’s hardest-to-reach communities have access to lifesaving information and services by partnering with local leaders and pioneering innovative models of service delivery,” said Mary-Dell Chilton, PhD. “As a scientist, I believe that you cannot address problems in isolation. A woman’s ability to plan a family is essential to all other international development efforts and should be a central pillar of any efforts to eliminate poverty and promote progress.”
“Planned Parenthood congratulates Dr. Mary-Dell Chilton on the well-deserved honor of receiving the 2013 World Food Prize, regarded as the “Nobel Prize” of food and agriculture,” said Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. “We are deeply grateful that she has selected Planned Parenthood Global to benefit from this honor, which will enhance our efforts to promote the sexual and reproductive health and rights of women, men and young people around the world.”
