Planned Parenthood, the nation’s leading reproductive health care advocate and provider, is now accepting nominations for the 2012 Planned Parenthood Federation of America Maggie Awards for Media Excellence.

The awards recognize exceptional contributions by the media and arts and entertainment industries that enhance the public's understanding of reproductive rights and health care issues, including contraception, sex education, teen pregnancy, abortion, and international family planning.

“The media plays a critical role in educating the public and advancing the national discourse on key issues that affect us all,” said PPFA President Cecile Richards. “These awards honor accurate, sensitive and thorough coverage of reproductive health issues.”

Inaugurated in 1978 and named after Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger, the annual awards cover the following categories:

  • Commentary
  • Daily Print Reporting
  • Radio Reporting
  • General Interest Magazine
  • Women’s Magazine
  • Online Reporting
  • TV News Reporting
  • Arts and Entertainment.

This year, Planned Parenthood announced two additional categories:

  • Social Media
  • Community/Personal blog.

“We’re proud to spotlight social media frontrunners who are raising awareness, connecting supporters and even driving traditional media coverage,” Richards said.

Entries are judged by professionals from the communications field and experts in family planning and reproductive health.  Judges consider creativity, quality, relevance and effectiveness, as well as cultural diversity.

Nominations for the 2012 PPFA Maggie Awards — for work appearing between January 1, 2011, and May 1, 2012 — should be submitted by May 1, 2012, along with a completed nomination form.  The nomination form and other information about submitting a nomination can be found on the PPFA website HERE.

Maggie Awards will be presented to winners in the arts and entertainment industries during the Planned Parenthood National Conference in March 2012 and to winners in the media categories during the Planned Parenthood Organizing and Policy Summit in July 2012.
