Statement on Passing of Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist

For Immediate Release: Jan. 30, 2014


WASHINGTON, DC — Karen Pearl, interim president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA), issued the following statement on the death hours ago of Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist.

"Today our thoughts and sympathies are with the family and friends of Chief Justice William Rehnquist. His commitment to public service and his 33 years on the bench of the U.S. Supreme Court, 19 of them as its chief justice, are a testament to his enduring legacy.

With the passing of Chief Justice Rehnquist, Planned Parenthood remains concerned about the changing nature of the Supreme Court. We urge President Bush to ensure that the highest court in the land will continue to protect the health and safety of women and uphold the constitutional rights that we cherish and that are the very fabric of American life."
