Certain politicians would rather take away women’s health care benefits than accept that the Affordable Care Act is the law of the land. WASHINGTON — In the middle of National Women’s Health Week, the House of Representatives will today take its 37th vote to repeal the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and its historic benefits for millions of women.  Already, 27 million women have benefited from the ACA’s provision of preventive health care without a co-pay, and 13 million women will be newly eligible for health insurance this fall.  Repealing the ACA would allow insurance companies to once again discriminate against women with higher premiums, and take away birth control and cancer screenings without co-pays.

“It’s uncanny – though not surprising - that the House of Representatives has timed this vote with National Women’s Health Week. Certain politicians would rather take away women’s health care benefits than accept that the Affordable Care Act is the law of the land. We urge them to listen to their constituents, because many of them are already benefiting from the historic women’s preventive benefit, which includes birth control and well-woman check-ups without a co-pay,” said Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America. “As the nation’s leading women’s health care provider and advocate, Planned Parenthood understands how important the Affordable Care Act is for women and we’re working hard to make sure women across the country know exactly how it benefits them.”

While the House of Representatives is attacking the ACA for the 37th time, Planned Parenthood is educating and engaging women across the country about the new law’s historic benefits. This week, in celebration of National Women’s Health Week, Planned Parenthood released a new video on well-woman exams, in an effort to increase preventive check-ups, which are covered by the ACA.  You can watch the video here.

Planned Parenthood is also highlighting the importance of no co-pay birth control as part of the preventive benefit. According to the Guttmacher Institute, 58 percent of pill users cite health benefits as a contributing factor for using birth control including endometriosis, menstrual pain, and menstrual regulation. Seven in ten Americans (70 percent) believe that health insurance companies should be required to cover the full cost of birth control, just as they do for other preventive services.

“I've been on birth control pills since I was 17 when I started developing ovarian cysts. I now have endometriosis. I wish people understood that for some people these pills are vital whether they are sexually active or not. Birth control pills may be preventing me from having surgery.  Even with insurance I was paying about $400 a year. I also have other health problems and doctors bills to deal with. When I was surprised by my pharmacist and told I was suddenly paying $0 I was thrilled! It's nice to get a break.” – Elaine, Knoxville, TN
