New Planned Parenthood Video Narrated by Actor Julianne Moore Highlights Women’s Health Benefits Under Health Care Reform

Washington, DC — To help educate American women about the tremendous benefits for them in the new health care reform law, Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) has produced a new online video that explains how the law ensures American women greater access to health care than at any time in the past. The video is narrated by Julianne Moore, Academy Award-nominated actor and a longtime active member of the Planned Parenthood Board of Advocates, a group of leaders in the arts and entertainment community committed to women’s reproductive health. The online video features an engaging animation to highlight the many new provisions that expand access to and broaden coverage for women’s health care.

“It is incumbent on all of us who worked hard to pass the health care reform law that advances women’s health more than any other law since the passage of Medicare and Medicaid in 1965 to educate American women about how the law benefits them,” said Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA).  “Too many women are confused about what the new health care law offers them, and that is why Planned Parenthood is working with Julianne Moore to ensure that women learn about all of the new benefits for them in the health care law so they can get the health care they need.”

A recent poll by the Kaiser Family Foundation found that a majority of Americans are confused about the new health care law and don’t know enough about the bill to understand how it will affect them.

The video lists the specific provisions of the health care bill that benefit women’s health including:

  • Extending health care coverage to tens of millions of women and families who currently don’t have insurance.
  • Guaranteeing affordable access to lifesaving screenings for breast and cervical cancer.
  • Stopping the discriminatory practice of charging women more than men for health insurance.
  • Ending the practice of denying insurance coverage because of pre-existing conditions, including breast cancer and pregnancy.
  • Significantly increasing access to reproductive health care, including family planning.
  • Including $75 million dollars for sex education.
  • Providing women with direct access to ob/gyns, no longer requiring them to get a referral from another physician.

While the health care bill includes many positive benefits for women, it also includes new unacceptable restrictions on private health insurance coverage for abortion. Planned Parenthood is working  to fix those restrictions before they go into effect in 2014.

Congress finally passed the health care reform bill, and President Obama signed it into law.  It’s the single biggest legislative advance in women’s health in 45 years.

But what exactly does health care reform mean for women?

It extends health care coverage to tens of millions of women and families.

It guarantees affordable access to lifesaving screenings for breast and cervical cancer.

It means women will no longer be forced to pay more than men do for health insurance.

It ends the practice of denying insurance coverage because of pre-existing conditions, including breast cancer and pregnancy.

It significantly increases access to reproductive health care, including family planning.

There's even $75 million dollars set aside for sex education.

But our work isn’t over yet.  The bill includes unfair restrictions on abortion coverage.

Rest assured, Planned Parenthood will keep fighting to fix the abortion restrictions before they go into effect in 2014.

In the meantime, Planned Parenthood centers will be providing health care to many of the millions of newly insured women.

Without a doubt, health care reform is a step forward for women, and a giant step toward a healthier America.
