The nation has lost a great leader today — a true visionary whose voice for women’s and civil rights will never be forgotten.

Her courage, grace and wisdom guided millions during her extraordinary life and her spirit will continue to live on in the women whom she inspired across the country.

“For those of us in the women’s health and rights community, Dr. Height was a shining light who led us forward in our fight for social justice and against inequality.  She was an indomitable force, blazing a trail for all women of all colors who seek to lead better, more productive lives.  Dr. Height was not afraid to break down barriers and tackle issues that for too long stood in the way of the advancement of so many Americans.  She knew that fighting for what was right was not easy but was the essential thing to do.

“Our thoughts and prayers are extended to her family and many friends and to the leadership and members of the National Council of Negro Women, which Dr. Height brilliantly led for more than 40 years.  In this time of sorrow, let us all be guided by the strength and spirit of Dr. Height as we celebrate her life and her many gifts to our country.  Most importantly, we rededicate ourselves to her lifelong quest of a better life for every person in the United States.”
