Sex Ed Video Breaks New Ground on Body Image

Planned Parenthood's Behind the Fig Leaf Web Video Illustrates Normal Differences in Sexual Anatomy

WASHINGTON, DC Today, in celebration of "Love Your Body Day," Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) launched a new Web animation titled, Am I Normal? Behind the Fig Leaf. With the message, "We all have the same parts, but each one looks different," the animated video illustrates normal differences in the appearance of male and female sexual anatomy. Am I Normal? Behind the Fig Leaf can be viewed on www.teenwire.com.

"One of the most difficult parts of adolescence is dealing with dramatic physical changes. Teens often feel confused or isolated during puberty, especially if their bodies are developing differently from their friends and peers. This new video provides accurate information and answers to questions that young people may be too embarrassed to ask," said PPFA Interim President Karen Pearl. "Behind the Fig Leaf gives teenagers a safe place to find accurate, honest information about their sexual health."

In many school districts across the country, abstinence-only programs are the only sex education available, and teens are given either no information or incorrect information about sexuality and sexual health issues. Sexual health information that is wrong, too sparse, or too late can have long-term and life-threatening consequences for teens.

Founded in February 1998, teenwire.com® is PPFA's award-winning sexual health Web site for teens. It offers medically accurate and honest sexual health information in language that teens understand. Half a million adolescents and parents visit teenwire.com each month to access sexual health information that is frank, honest and medically accurate.
