Cosmopolitan, Redbook, Marie Claire Magazines and Two Journalists
Recognized for Their Coverage of Reproductive Health and Rights

Washington, DC — Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) is pleased to announce the winners of the PPFA Maggie Awards for 2008: Cosmopolitan magazine, Redbook magazine, Marie Claire magazine, John Young of the Waco Tribune- Herald, and Judy Peres from the Chicago Tribune

The PPFA Maggie Awards recognize exceptional achievement by the media and arts and entertainment industries in presentation and coverage of reproductive rights and health care issues, including contraception, sexuality education, teen pregnancy, abortion and international family planning.

"“In today’s world of the 24-hour news cycle, clear, concise and thought-provoking reporting that breaks through the clutter is vital to enhance the public’s understanding of reproductive and sexual health issues,” said PPFA President Cecile Richards. "Planned Parenthood is proud to recognize Cosmo, Redbook, and Marie Claire, along with John Young and Judy Peres, today for their outstanding work drawing attention to the important reproductive health care issues facing millions of women, men and teens all across America every day."

Award-winning journalist and host and executive producer of Democracy Now!, Amy Goodman, presented the awards at the Planned Parenthood 2008 Organizing and Policy Summit July 18. Democracy Now! is a national, daily, independent, award-winning news program airing on more than 700 TV and radio stations in North America.

The PPFA Maggie Awards, inaugurated in 1978, are named after Planned Parenthood founder Margaret Sanger. This year's winning entries are:

  • Cosmopolitan, “The Sneaky Threat to Your Fertility” by Stacey Colino and “I Have an STD.  Now What?” by Gail O’Connor
