Vasectomy Funding Available in Muskegon County
MUSKEGON, MI — Public Health – Muskegon County's Family Planning Task Force announces the start of a free vasectomy clinic, the only one of its kind in the state. Funding for the first year is being provided through the Peggy Jensen and Gerald Nehra Donor Advised Fund of the Community Foundation for Muskegon County. Planned Parenthood of West and Northern Michigan is the fiduciary agency. Local surgeon, Dr. Dick Kamps is performing the surgeries. This service is limited to low-income men who are residents of Muskegon County. Men who are interested can contact Planned Parenthood's Muskegon Health Center at (231) 724-4415 for more information.
According to the Family Planning Task Force's chair, Faith Groesbeck, "Family Planning isn't just a women's healthcare issue. There are a lot of barriers to men accessing the only two forms of birth control available to them: condoms and vasectomies. For example, only women are eligible for Plan First!, the state's family planning benefit waiver, which covers tubal ligations. Our members decided to do something to help support men who want to be responsible, but lack the resources."
The funding is limited to nine vasectomies per year. Those who support the free vasectomy concept can make donations directly to Planned Parenthood of West and Northern MI, specifying that they want their donation to go to free vasectomies in Muskegon.
Planned Parenthood of West and Northern Michigan provides sexual health care and sexuality education services, with locations in eight Michigan cities. Log on, learn more: ppwnm.org.
