Teens Learn How to Make Smart Choices Using Technology
CHARLEVOIX, Michigan — Planned Parenthood of West and Northern Michigan (PPWNM) was awarded a grant from the Charlevoix County Community Foundation to incorporate iPad technology in education programming. The grant will allow PPWNM to create more iPad-based programs and to purchase new technology for Project Smart Choices.
Project Smart Choices provides evidence-based sexuality education programming to students ages 12-17 in Charlevoix County. The project provides the knowledge, skills, and support necessary to promote abstinence, prevent unhealthy relationships, unintended pregnancy, and sexually transmitted infections including HIV. Participant success is measured by pre and post knowledge tests, a role play rubric, and student feedback.
Utilizing iPad technology for Project Smart Choices will enable PPWNM to reach a wide variety of learners by incorporating visual, audio, and tactile learning styles in sexuality education programming by utilizing the technology that teens use every day. Emily Boyle, a Beaver Island Community School sophomore remarked, "This is one of my favorite classes. The iPad activities are a great idea!"
The grant, is currently being implemented in the middle schools and high schools throughout Charlevoix County. PPWNM serves Charlevoix County from its education office and health center located on 1003 Spring Street in Petoskey.
