On Wednesday, May 5, 2010, Planned Parenthood of Southwest and Central Florida, Inc. presents its SOURCE Teen Theatre Performance & Dinner event. The evening, which takes place at Renaissance on 9th (1816 9th St. W., Bradenton) at 5:30pm, will include a wine and beer reception, dinner and a performance of “Freshman Year” by Planned Parenthood’s award-winning SOURCE Theatre Troupe.

The purpose of this evening is to highlight an example of a comprehensive sex education program that would provide Manatee County youth with the information they need to make safe and healthy choices. “Freshman Year” is a thought-provoking story about three ninth grade girls whose lives are forever altered by events that occur during their freshman year of high school. The play stresses the consequences of high-risk behavior, dealing with issues such as teen pregnancy, peer pressure, date rape and sexually transmitted infections.

The timing for this event is perfect, as May 5 marks the 2010 National Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, which is organized by the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy, and May is National Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month, which is organized by national organization Advocates for Youth.

Earlier in the day, the SOURCE will present a free performance of “Freshman Year” for teens enrolled in programs served by Planned Parenthood.

Co-chairs are Amanda Edge, Teresa Rawe and Stephany Ricketts. Cost: $60. Proceeds will help fund Planned Parenthood’s pregnancy prevention programs in Manatee County, including the afternoon performance of “Freshman Year.” For futher information or to make a reservation, call 941.365.3913, ext. 1124.
