Comedian, writer and producer Carol Leifer will be the featured speaker at the 18th Annual Planned Parenthood Mid and South Michigan (PPMSM) Luncheon. The luncheon will be from noon–2 p.m. April 24 at the Troy Marriott.

Tickets for this year’s luncheon start at $85 per person, with patron sponsorships ranging from $150 to $5,000. Individuals may register online at www.plannedparenthooddetroit.org.

A trailblazing female standup comic and vocal supporter of Planned Parenthood, Leifer has written for Saturday Night Live, Seinfeld, and HBO’s critically acclaimed The Larry Sanders Show. Recently, Leifer won a 2012 Writers Guild Award for her work on the Emmy Award-winning show Modern Family, and was one of the writers for the 2012 Academy Awards hosted by Billy Crystal.

Leifer is speaking on behalf of PPMSM at a time when the organization—along with access to basic women’s health care—have come under increasing political attacks. Ninety-seven percent of Planned Parenthood’s services are essential, life-saving services, including annual exams, breast exams, treatment of precancerous conditions, birth control and testing and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV.

“When Planned Parenthood calls, I am always there,” said Leifer. “I feel now more than ever that our commitment to Planned Parenthood is of paramount importance.”

This month, PPMSM opened a new health center in Ferndale, MI. The center offers core services to a diverse population, including the underserved gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community. “Carol is a stalwart proponent of choice, and an advocate for the rights of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community,” said PPMSM CEO Lori Lamerand. “She is willing to fight for everyone’s access to affordable, life-saving reproductive health care.”

The author of When You Lie About Your Age, the Terrorists Win: Reflections on Looking in the Mirror, Leifer focuses her sharp wit on her experiences growing up Jewish, facing the prospect of breast cancer, and coming out as a lesbian in her forties. Leifer was selected to address the luncheon after the previously scheduled speaker, Rosie Perez, went into production for a motion picture.

The annual luncheon is organized by a committee of volunteers, co-chaired this year by Betsy Appleton, Kim Chesbrough and Lori Siegel. Since its inception, the annual luncheon committee has raised nearly $1 million for PPMSM. Grosse Pointe businessman and philanthropist William Rands III will receive the 2012 Wally Klein Leadership Award for his commitment to equal access to reproductive health care.

Past annual luncheon speakers include: Joan Rivers, Cecile Richards, Mavis Leno, Mia Farrow, Bianca Jagger, Olympia Dukakis, Judy Collins, Kathy Najimy and Faye Wattleton.

Planned Parenthood offers affordable reproductive health care through medical services, education and advocacy. Ninety-seven percent of our services are focused on cancer screening, Pap tests, breast exams, birth control, vasectomies, sex education (including abstinence), and diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV/AIDS. With 17 health centers serving 31 Michigan counties, PPMSM serves more than 69,000 women, men and teens each year.
