(Wilmington, DE)  Planned Parenthood of Delaware (PPDE) and the Latin American Community Center joined together today to urge the Delawareans to commemorate National Latino AIDS Awareness Day on October 15, 2009.  The purpose of the day is to increase awareness about the importance of HIV prevention and education efforts in and among the Latino community.

Latinos are approximately 6% of the state’s population and account for nearly 7% of AIDS cases diagnosed in the Delaware. These rates mean that Latinos in Delaware as much more likely to become infected with HIV then their white counterparts. And nationally, Latinos are 2.5 times more likely to become HIV positive than whites. Hence the campaign by the National Latino Aids Awareness Coalition (www.NLAAD.org).

Annually on this day, Latinos around the country not only recognize the toll HIV has taken on their community, they also raise awareness of the importance of prevention and care through HIV testing activities, press conferences, health fairs, cultural events, candlelight vigils, religious services, health screenings, and many other activities. Planned Parenthood of Delaware and the Latin American Community Center are putting a spotlight on their HIV Testing and Education Services.

“October 15, 2009 is about power—the power of information, prevention, education and treatment for HIV in the Latino Community,” said Madeline Donato, PPDE’s Bilingual Clinician. “The message is simple:  Be smart, protect yourself and get tested. Sea inteligente, protegerse y hágase una prueba.”

“This October 15, 2009 advocate and empower yourself…..Know your status! Get Tested!” said Marco Ramos, LACC HIV/AIDS Prevention Specialist.
