Press Release 04-08-11: PLANNED PARENTHOOD OUTRAGED AT ATTEMPTS TO SHUT GOVERNMENT OVER WOMEN’S HEALTH

Statement from Nanci Hoffman, President & CEO of Planned Parenthood of Delaware, Regarding the Final Day of Budget Negotiations

“It's an outrage to shut down the government over an extreme proposal that would deny millions of women Pap tests, breast cancer screenings and birth control. Attacking Planned Parenthood’s preventive health care hurts women, does not cut the deficit or fix the economy, and must be stopped. Planned Parenthood of Delaware urges the Delaware delegation to hold firm and not sacrifice women’s health to satisfy an extreme political agenda.”

BACKGROUND: More than 90 percent of the health care Planned Parenthood provides is preventive.
Every year, Planned Parenthood doctors and nurses nationwide provide:

• nearly one million screenings for cervical cancer/over 3,300 in Delaware
• 830,000 breast exams/over 4,700 in Delaware
• affordable birth control to nearly 2.5 million patients/over 17,500 units of birth control distributed in Delaware
• nearly four million tests and treatments for sexually transmitted infections, including HIV testing/over 18,800 in Delaware
• Planned Parenthood of Delaware serves 10,000 people a year and 90% of the services are preventive.
