(Wilmington) The staff of the Sexuality Education Training Institute (SETI) at Planned Parenthood of Delaware is working to tackle youth health risks by facilitating evidence-based HIV/STD and unplanned pregnancy prevention programs with hundreds of youth, training cadres of local teachers and community service providers to implement evidence-based programs, educating parents about how to talk to their kids about sex, and targeting education and training events to the areas of Delaware which are at the highest risk.

“Delaware has the second highest rate in the nation for early teen sex and for number of sexual partners teens have. We are also a top 10 state for teen pregnancy and HIV infection,” said Dr. Catherine Dukes, Vice President of Education and Training of Planned Parenthood of Delaware. “Evidence-based sex education programs actually reduce the risk behaviors associated with HIV/STDs and unplanned pregnancy. Youth in Delaware desperately need the information in these programs to make healthy decisions about their bodies and their relationships.”

SETI implements all Personal Responsibility Education Programming (PREP) initiatives for the entire state. This federal funding was made available to Delaware Department of Public Health through the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, with the goal of reducing rates of unplanned pregnancy and STDs through evidence-based trainings to teachers and community service providers. Over the past few years, SETI has trained teachers in every single school district in Delaware. To follow up post-training, the education staff provides robust technical assistance, monitors fidelity, and provides incentives to teachers for completing programs with youth.

In 2011, SETI delivered 230 community education workshops to 2,285 youth, adults, and parents and facilitated 33 professional development events to 912 teachers, nurses, social workers, and youth service providers. SETI is unique in providing Individual and Family Consultations and Professional Technical Assistance Services. The Individual and Family Consultations Model provides customized education to community members in need of supportive listening, education, & skill building. The consultations have provided high quality individual education parents, teenagers, families, couples, and individuals with developmental disabilities. Technical Assistance Services provide robust follow-up support in the form of booster trainings, emails, statistics & resources, quarterly newsletters, coaching/mentoring, and a web-based technical assistance tool which will be launched later this month.

SETI is proud to be a leader in the Delaware community fighting to equip teens to reduce preventable health risks every day.
