PPWNM Statement on Federal Budget Agreement
Statement from Katherine Humphrey, President/CEO Planned Parenthood of West and Northern Michigan, on Federal Budget Agreement
Today we applaud and thank the members of Congress # Republicans and Democrats # who stood up for women’s health and defeated the extreme proposal to defund Planned Parenthood, and who proved that an extreme minority cannot hijack the budget process to take health care away from women. We are grateful to the many members of Congress who spoke so eloquently about their own health and the health of the women of this country. This was a moment of true leadership.
The debate over this extreme proposal turned into a teachable moment. Now, millions more Americans and our leaders in Washington understand more fully the vital role that Planned Parenthood plays in women’s lives # from lifesaving tests for cancer and HIV to helping them plan their families. Those, like Senator Kyl, who willfully distorted the record, were forced to recant their baseless attacks on Planned Parenthood, as he did in a statement to CNN.
But despite yesterday’s victory, the fight continues and we are ready for the next battle to save the national family planning program (Title X). This program provides lifesaving care and family planning to five million women a year. Members of Congress will hold a vote next week on dismantling this vital program. Make no mistake about it. An attack on the national family program is an attack on women’s health and on Planned Parenthood. We will fight and defeat any measure that comes before the House and Senate to dismantle this essential program, which was signed into law by 1970.
Thank you to everyone who supported us and let your voices be heard over the course of this debate! We hope we can rely on your support as we continue to fight for women's rights and access to affordable, quality health care.
