SHREWSBURY, NJ — Planned Parenthood of Central New Jersey (PPCNJ) has received Planned Parenthood Federation of America’s 2009 Affiliate Excellence Award for Professional Education and Training. Each year, Planned Parenthood Federation of America honors a select group of exceptional affiliates, staff members, and volunteers for their important contributions to health care, family planning, education services, and reproductive rights.

PPCNJ’s professional training services are designed to enhance the knowledge, skills, and comfort level of educators, counselors, social workers, nurses, and other healthcare professionals in the areas of sexual and reproductive health, adolescent pregnancy prevention, child and adolescent development, and other related topics.  Providing a range of professional training workshops allows PPCNJ to expand its reach and impact beyond its capacity for providing education programs directly to its target audiences by training the professionals who work with them. PPCNJ’s professional training is further designed to increase awareness and understanding of the health services available from Planned Parenthood among professionals who are in a position to refer their clients and students to its health centers.

“Last year, PPCNJ was honored to receive the excellence award for Community Education programs,” stated Phyllis Kinsler, PPCNJ’s President and CEO. “Both awards recognize the expertise and creativity of our superb education staff.  This year’s award also highlights our commitment to collaboration and effective partnerships.  By training other professionals, we eventually reach many more individuals in than we could educate on our own.  During these trying financial times, investing in our professional training programs is the most cost-effective way to increase the number of adults and adolescents that receive comprehensive sexuality education.  We are honored that so many organizations and individuals in central New Jersey value our training program and we are proud to assist them in serving their own clients.”

In 2008, PPCNJ’s professional training and education programs were attended by over 500 professionals serving Monmouth and Middlesex Counties. As PPCNJ is registered with the New Jersey Department of Education, it is able to provide Continuing Education Units (CEU’s) for educators and school nurses who attend its workshops or in-service trainings. In addition, PPCNJ is eligible to provide Nursing Contact Hours through the New Jersey State Nurses Association.

The expansion and enhancement of PPCNJ’s professional training services includes the guidance and support received from the affiliate’s volunteer Education and Training Advisory Committee, which consists of 15 health care, education, and social service professionals. This committee, which was established in the spring of 2008, has provided tremendous opportunities for Planned Parenthood to expand its collaborative partnerships through the delivery of professional training as well as other education programs and services.

“As we look to continue to expand the reach and scope of our professional training services to meet the needs of educators, social services and health care professionals throughout central New Jersey, we are encouraged by this recognition by Planned Parenthood Federation,” stated Alison Glaser, Vice President of Community Services.
