Planned Parenthood's Muskegon Center to Open March 8

MUSKEGON, MICHIGAN — Planned Parenthood of West and Northern Michigan (PPWNM) is pleased to announce the opening of its newest health center, with a return to the Muskegon community after a two-year absence. The Muskegon Center will open to the public on Monday, March 8. The center will be located in the Public Health
– Muskegon County building at 209 E. Apple Ave.

The Muskegon Center will become the dedicated Title X provider for Muskegon County. Title X is a government-funded grant program administered by the state, which provides access to family planning services, particularly for lower-income women.

“We are excited about this opportunity to partner with the State and the County,” said PPWNM Vice President of Medical Services Bridget White, “This is an excellent strategy to cost-effectively meet the reproductive health needs of the Muskegon community.”

The Muskegon Center will offer a range of family planning services including annual exams, reproductive cancer screenings, and birth control supplies and information. The public health department is required by law to make the services available.

“We’re relieved to have the public health department’s obligation fulfilled,” said Ken Kraus, director of Public Health – Muskegon County. “Our department would need additional staff and resources to provide family planning services on our own. We’ve very grateful with Planned Parenthood’s decision to provide the services in Muskegon County again.”

Clients can call the Muskegon Center beginning March 1 to schedule appointments. The Center will be open three days a week to start; and hours will be evaluated after the first few months to see if any changes should be made to better serve the community. White said there are programs available to help those who qualify, pay for services, “Our clinicians are happy to help clients determine if they are eligible for Plan First! or other government and privately funded support.”

Planned Parenthood’s presence in Muskegon dates back to 1963; but in 2007 PPWNM was forced to close its Muskegon Center on Peck St. due to a major cut in government funding. Muskegon Family Care then became the Title X provider for the county, but closed its doors last November.

“I am so pleased that we are able to return to Muskegon to fill this void,” said PPWNM President/CEO Katherine Humphrey. “Financially struggling women were being referred to other counties for services, which is just unacceptable. Now they can get the care they need close to home once again.”
