September 2, 2008 (Des Moines, Iowa) – On July 14, 2008, Planned Parenthood of Greater Iowa’s (PPGI) Susan Knapp Health Center began offering prenatal care services. The success of the added service could be seen in the first day as three patients scheduled a prenatal care visit.

“Our staff have been trained to meet the needs of prenatal patients and are excited to be seeing patients who may not otherwise be able to afford these services,” said Todd Buchacker, regional director of health services for PPGI. “One of the benefits of participating in our prenatal care program is that our staff assists patients in enrolling for Title 19, to help cover the cost of the prenatal care and delivery.”

Prenatal patients are provided comprehensive physical exams and health education during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy. At that time of the pregnancy, patients are transitioned to other health care providers who will handle the delivery. Patients are encouraged to then return to PPGI for post-partum checkups.

Being able to offer prenatal care to the neighborhoods north of downtown as well as the Drake community was the vision of PPGI when the Susan Knapp Health Center was opened in July 2007.

“We’re pleased to be able to expand our prenatal program to families in this part of Des Moines,” said Jill June, president and CEO of PPGI. “This added dimension of our agency demonstrates PPGI’s strong commitment to increasing health care delivery and supporting healthy families.”

The Susan Knapp Health Center is the second PPGI center to offer prenatal care services. The Joseph R. Rosenfield Center began offering prenatal care in 1998 in response to high infant mortality rates. Currently the Rosenfield Center sees six patients a week and the Susan Knapp Health Center is seeing two patients a week for prenatal care. The Susan Knapp Health Center is located at 2304 University Ave., Des Moines and the Rosenfield Center is located at 1000 E. Army Post Rd., Des Moines.

Planned Parenthood of Greater Iowa serves 85 Iowa counties and three Illinois counties through 17 medical centers, an education and resource center and regional educator. PPGI is a leader in providing affordable reproductive health care, education and advocacy for all.
