Planned Parenthood Resumes Service in Santa Rosa
By GUY KOVNER
Planned Parenthood will resume offering reproductive health services in Sonoma County on Tuesday at a refurbished clinic in Santa Rosa.
The local clinic will be operated by Planned Parenthood Shasta Pacific, based in Concord and currently operating 30 health centers and satellite sites in 13 counties, including Lake, Napa and Solano counties.
Following a reorganization within Planned Parenthood, a 94-year-old national organization, the Shasta Pacific affiliate is expanding its services to Sonoma, Mendocino, Marin and San Francisco counties. Appointments at the Santa Rosa clinic, located at 1140 Sonoma Ave., can now be made by calling 527-7656.
“We will start here and grow as needed,” said Heather Estes, president and CEO of the Shasta Pacific affiliate.
The Santa Rosa clinic will offer family planning services, cancer screening and testing for sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV. Abortion services will be added later.
Estes said the new clinic will attempt to tailor its services to the area’s needs. “We’re still learning what the community needs from us,” she said.
Planned Parenthood’s patients are primarily women in their 20s, most of them uninsured, Estes said. Sexual health services for men are offered, as well. The clinic will accept patients with private insurance, Medi-Cal coverage and offers a sliding scale of fees for the uninsured.
The former Planned Parenthood clinic in Rohnert Park is no longer operating. That facility had been run by Planned Parenthood Golden Gate, previously an affiliate of the national organization. About three months ago, Planned Parenthood Federation of America cuts its ties with the Golden Gate affiliate, which subsequently became Golden Gate Community Health, with six Bay Area clinics. The Rohnert Park clinic was consolidated with a health center in San Rafael last month, according to Golden Gate Community Health’s Web site. Officials at Golden Gate could not be reached for comment.
Planned Parenthood Shasta Pacific plans to open a San Francisco clinic in January, and is searching for a location in Mendocino County, most likely in Ukiah, said Adrienne Verrilli, a Planned Parenthood spokeswoman.
