Planned Parenthood Offers Week of Free HIV Testing June 25-29, 2012

MICHIGAN - Planned Parenthood of West and Northern Michigan (PPWNM) will host a Free HIV Testing Week (by appointment) Monday, June 25, through Friday, June 29, at all eight of its health centers, in recognition of National HIV Testing Day on June 27, 2012.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than one million Americans are living with HIV, and 20 percent of them don't know they have it. Testing and treatment can save lives and reduce the spread of HIV.

"A person living with HIV may not show any symptoms for many years. It's possible for that person to unknowingly pass the virus that causes AIDS to their partner," said PPWNM Vice President of Medical Services Bridget White. "So this free testing offer is an opportunity for people to take the test, and take control, by knowing their status for sure."

Currently, almost 40 percent of people with HIV are not diagnosed until they already have developed AIDS. That can be up to 10 years after they first became infected with HIV. "Early detection is key to improving quality of life and reducing the risk of spreading infection to others," said White.

PPWNM features the rapid HIV test by Alere®. The test involves a simple finger poke, with confidential results in just 20 minutes.
