YAKIMA, SUNNYSIDE & GRANGER – On Friday, October 15, 2010, Planned Parenthood of Greater Washington and North Idaho (PPGWNI) will be hosting free HIV testing at three locations in central Washington. PPGWNI is offering these tests to honor National Latino/a AIDS Awareness Day (NLAAD), the theme of which is “Save a Life, It May Be Your Own. Get tested for HIV.” In Yakima, testing will be offered from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Yakima Valley Community College (YVCC). In Sunnyside, testing will be held during regular clinic hours at the PPGWNI Health Center, located at 2934 Covey Lane. In Granger, tests will be offered from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Radio KDNA Granger Community Center, located at 121 Sunnyside Ave.

NLAAD began in 2003 in response to the devastating impact HIV/AIDS has had on Hispanic/Latino communities across the United States. Scheduled to occur within Hispanic Heritage Month, NLAAD’s purpose is to underscore the importance HIV testing and prevention education play in stemming the spread of the disease. “We are pleased to support our communities with resources and education,” said Anna Franks, President & CEO of PPGWNI. “Offering free HIV testing in these three locations is just one way we show our commitment to helping all people lead healthy, responsible lives.”

The Census Bureau reports that 15.8% of the U.S. population is Hispanic/Latino. Yet according to 2007 figures from the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), Hispanics/Latinos account for 18% of new HIV/AIDS cases and comprise 19% of all people in the United States currently living with AIDS.
