Last Friday, Planned Parenthood Federation of America awarded Planned Parenthood Health Systems and Planned Parenthood of Central North Carolina with the 2010 Affiliate Excellence Award in Public Policy for passage of the 2009 Health Youth Act.

The Healthy Youth Act was signed into law last June by Governor Perdue and requires that all 7th-9th grade students in North Carolina public schools receive scientifically accurate, abstinence based comprehensive sexuality education.

The award was presented by PPFA President Cecile Richards during the PPFA National Conference in Washington, DC on March 19, 2010.

The award is confirmation that the Health Youth Act in North Carolina was the Federationís finest public policy achievement for all of last year.  This legislative victory would have been a tremendous accomplishment in any state.  For it to pass in a state like North Carolina, which has embraced abstinence-only sex education in public schools since the mid-1990s, is truly astounding.

This legislative victory was a collaborative effort involving both North Carolina Planned Parenthood affiliates and a unified coalition of almost 30 diverse organizations.

This legislative victory ensures that tens of thousands of at-risk youth will receive the information they need to protect themselves.
