Hempstead, NY—Planned Parenthood of Nassau County (PPNC) has been awarded a $7,500 grant from the Long Island Fund for Women and Girls to fund the Trust Women Campaign, an outreach and advocacy initiative to empower African American women to speak out in support of women’s rights, as well as access reproductive health care.

PPNC is a leading provider of reproductive health care, family planning services, sexuality education and pro-choice advocacy on Long Island, serving more than 40,000 women, men and teens annually. However, opponents of legal abortion are trying to drive a wedge between Planned Parenthood and African American women by using tactics such as billboards and videos filled with misinformation and distortion.

The LIFWG grant will underwrite the Trust Women Campaign, which uses grassroots outreach, community networking and small, intimate events to dispel these myths. Through the initiative, PPNC will work to increase African American women’s knowledge about Planned Parenthood and the sexual and reproductive health care services that the agency provides. Ultimately, the campaign seeks to increase African American women’s involvement in pro-choice advocacy.

“For many people in our community, the only thing they know about Planned Parenthood is the outrageous and untrue information being handed out by the protesters in front of our health center,” said PPNC’s President & CEO, JoAnn D. Smith. “The Trust Women Campaign will correct those misconceptions. We want women to feel comfortable coming to us for health care—and we want them to understand how important it is to fight to protect access to those services as well.”

The Long Island Fund for Women & Girls is a charitable organization that invests in the power of women and the dreams of girls. LIFWG funds programs that improve the lives of women and girls, highlights and addresses women’s issues, and develops women’s philanthropy.
