Hempstead, NY—In recognition of May as Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month, Planned Parenthood of Nassau County (PPNC) is encouraging young people in the community to make healthy decisions that will help them prevent unintended pregnancy.

Although the United States has achieved sharp declines in teen pregnancy and childbearing over the past two decades, the U.S. rate still far exceeds those of other developed countries. Locally, high-risk communities such as Roosevelt and Hempstead still experience above-county-average rates of teen pregnancy and teen birth. For example, according to the New York State Department of Health, the teen pregnancy rate in Roosevelt in 131 per 1,000 females ages 15-19, while the county average is 53.1 per 1,000 females ages 15-19.

“It’s wonderful to see the progress we’ve made in reducing teen pregnancy, and yet there is still work to be done,” said JoAnn D. Smith, PPNC’s President & CEO. “Fortunately, we know that when teens have access to sex education, accurate information, and reliable contraceptives, they are much less likely to get pregnant.”

PPNC’s state-funded Comprehensive Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention (CAPP) program is leading a community-wide response to teen pregnancy prevention, by targeting high risk areas, such as Roosevelt, Hempstead and Westbury, and providing evidence-based sex education, facilitating teens’ access to reproductive health care, and promoting family communication.

In recognition of Teen Pregnancy Prevention month, CAPP educators will reach out to approximately 700 students through small group discussions about teen pregnancy, arranging for a teen mother to share her experiences with several after-school groups, in-class presentations, lunch room tabling, street outreach on PPNC’s Mobile unit, the Plan Van, and messages on CAPP’s Facebook page.
