EASTERN WASHINGTON & NORTH IDAHO – Aligned with Advocates for Youth’s national Family Sexuality Education Month, Planned Parenthood of Greater Washington and North Idaho (PPGWNI) is offering workshops for parents to help them become the primary sexuality educators of their school-age children. Families are Talking is designed to encourage a healthy dialog about sex, health, and shared values among parents, teens and families.

Planned Parenthood’s educators teach parents how to have an open dialogue with their children and help them share their family values and teach their children responsible decision-making and positive behaviors regarding sexuality. “Sex Education is an integral part of our mission: it’s woven into everything we do,” said Anna Franks, President and CEO of PPGWNI. “Research shows that education is the best prevention and parents play an important role in helping their children make healthy decisions about sex.”

Noemy, a parent participant in the 2009 Families are Talking workshops, stated, “This class helped me a lot! I used to think that when issues came up I should just let them pass, but now know I know that I should speak up and educate my kids myself.”

Planned Parenthood educators are trained to provide age-appropriate, medically-accurate, comprehensive sex education in order to reduce and eliminate unwanted pregnancies and the spread of HIV and STIs. “We believe in empowering healthy families with unbiased knowledge,” said Amy Claussen, Vice President of Education and Professional Training. “More than three million teenage girls—at least one in four—have a sexually transmitted infection, which emphasizes the need for real, comprehensive sex education.”

Workshops will be held in private homes, Planned Parenthood teaching sites, or neutral third-party locations. There is no charge for these trainings, but donations will be accepted.
