August 20, 2008 (DES MOINES, Iowa) — In an effort to reduce the number of unintended pregnancies in Iowa, Planned Parenthood is offering a solution for Iowa women to receive free long-acting birth control during a three month promotion. The four Planned Parenthood affiliates of Iowa have partnered to launch a statewide promotion to offer free IUDs (intrauterine devices) and Implanon™ (hormonal implant), which are long-acting and highly effective methods.

“We are excited to partner with other Iowa Planned Parenthood affiliates; this is a great opportunity for us to extend our reach to all Iowa communities to offer free long-acting reversible birth control to all Iowa women,” says Jill June, Planned Parenthood of Greater Iowa’s president and chief executive officer.
Long-acting reversible birth control refers to methods of contraception that are effective for years without daily, monthly or even annual maintenance, but can be removed — are reversible — when a woman wants to have a child. This convenience is great for women who are not planning to have children within the next few years, wish to space their pregnancies, are not ready to be pregnant or have completed their families but do not want a permanent method.

“We are committed to helping Iowa women by removing the financial barrier to these birth control methods,” says June. “Long-acting reversible contraception, such as an IUD or Implanon, can be very expensive and we are thrilled to be able to offer these methods at no charge to all Iowa women for the next three months,” says June.

All women are eligible to receive a free IUD or Implanon during the promotional months (September, October and November) as there are no income restrictions. Appointments may be scheduled by calling the nearest Iowa Planned Parenthood clinic at 1-800-230-PLAN (7526) by September 30.

An IUD is a small, T-shaped device made of soft plastic that contains copper or a natural hormone. It is inserted into the uterus, but may be removed at any time with no lasting effects. IUDs are 99.9 percent effective and last anywhere from five (Mirena®) to 12 years (ParaGard®).

Implanon is a thin, match-stick sized rod that is inserted beneath the skin of the upper arm. It works by continuously releasing a very small amount of progestin hormone into the bloodstream for three years and also is up to 99.9 percent effective in preventing ovulation and fertilization. It can be removed at any time.

More than 2,100 Iowa women took advantage of PPGI’s previous free IUD and Implanon promotions. For more information on IUDs and Implanon, visit the health topics section of or call 1-800-230-PLAN (7526).
