Seattle –In recognition of World AIDS Day on December 1, Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest (PPGNW) will offer free HIV testing at its 20 health centers in Western Washington December 2 – 6 2013.  We have come a long way in the fight against HIV/AIDS; yet the epidemic continues to affect millions of people around the world and across the Northwest, with some communities impacted more than others.  Through offering free testing, Planned Parenthood is working to increase access to education and health care, reduce stigma, and helping to create the “Healthiest Generation Ever.”

As the nation’s leading women’s health care provider and advocate, Planned Parenthood is also educating its clients about the new health care law and helping them through the process of signing up for health insurance or expanded Medicaid.  Many of PPGNW’s clients don’t realize they are eligible.  PPGNW is working for full implementation of the Affordable Care Act to reduce health care disparities and expand access to care for thousands of individuals in the Northwest.

“We’re communicating with all of our patients to make sure they know that they may be eligible for health insurance subsidies or for expanded Medicaid in Washington State.  We have in-person assisters in many of our centers to help individuals sign-up,” said Chris Charbonneau, CEO of PPGNW.

“Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest is committed to fighting for all people to be part of a healthy, AIDS-free generation, no matter who they are, no matter where they live, no matter what their sexual orientation is,” said Charbonneau.  “On World AIDS Day, we join partners in the U.S. and around the world in renewing our commitment to ensuring that women, men and young people in the hardest to reach communities are able to receive the information and health care they need to lead healthy and productive lives.”

Planned Parenthood of the Great Northwest (PPGNW) will provide free HIV testing at 20 health centers across western Washington starting Monday, December 2 thru Friday, December 6, 2013.   To make an appointment please call 1-800-230 PLAN (7526.)  Walk-ins are also welcome.  Visit www.ppgnw.org for the health center nearest you.

The free HIV tests will be paid for by the Someone You Know fund which provides preventive health service like HPV vaccines, sexually transmitted infection tests, vasectomies and birth control to uninsured and low-income people in the Pacific Northwest.  Rather than turn this vulnerable population away, PPGNW uses the Someone You Know fund to serve them immediately.  The fund is exclusively supported by private donations through PPGNW.

PPGNW’s health centers play a crucial role in the reduction of health disparities by providing high-quality, nonjudgmental and affordable HIV screening, family planning and preventive care.   To make an appointment please call 1-800-230 PLAN (7526.)  Walk-ins are also welcome.  Visit www.ppgnw.org for the health center nearest you.
