Ellensburg – As a participant in the Bite of the Burg Festival on Tuesday, September 21st, Planned Parenthood of Greater Washington and North Idaho (PPGWNI) will be offering one packet of NextChoice Emergency Contraception to festival-goers with valid identification. Emergency contraception (EC) is a safe and effective way to prevent pregnancy up to five days after unprotected intercourse. Essentially a high-dose birth control pill, EC works to prevent ovulation, and has no effect on existing pregnancies. EC is more effective the sooner it is taken, therefore, Planned Parenthood recommends that clients keep their medicine cabinets stocked with emergency contraception pills before they are needed. In addition to offering EC, PPGWNI will also be handing out a variety of free items and publicizing the new location of the Ellensburg Health Center, now located at 613 N. Pine Street.

“PPGWNI is dedicated to providing quality health care, honest education, and fearless advocacy for all people,” said Anna Franks, President and CEO of PPGWNI. “We are offering free EC as part of our commitment to helping people take charge of their reproductive futures.” PPGWNI has held a “Free EC” day at Bite of the Burg for the last several years. In 2009, 300 emergency contraception packets were distributed, and this year, staff expects to distribute the same amount. “This is a popular event,” Franks added. “Each year, we’ve given away every packet we’ve allocated for the event, and this year will probably be no different.”

Planned Parenthood of Greater Washington and North Idaho sees over 40,000 clients per year. Roughly twelve percent of clients are seen at the Ellensburg Health Center, which has helped over 45,000 men, women and teens since it began operations in 1989. In June, the Health Center moved from its location downtown to a larger, updated facility on the corner of 7th Avenue and Pine Street.

Bite of the Burg will be held on Tuesday, September 21st in Downtown Ellensburg from 2-5 p.m.
