Planned Parenthood Announces Opening of Fayetteville Health Center

Expanding services offered to community

Fayetteville, NC - Today Planned Parenthood of Central North Carolina announced plans to open a state-of-the-art reproductive health center in Fayetteville, near the intersection of Skibo and Yadkin Roads. The 11,000 square foot health center is part of a $5.8 million dollar capital campaign that includes expansion of the Cumberland County education and advocacy programs.

“We’ve received phone calls from people in need of Planned Parenthood health services almost daily since we opened our education office in Fayetteville in 2003,” said Monika Thigpen, community affairs manager and coordinator of Planned Parenthood’s education programs in Fayetteville.

More than 200 Cumberland County teenagers and their parents have participated in Planned Parenthood’s successful community education programs, which receive funding from local foundations and the state.

Since opening their doors in 2003, Planned Parenthood of Central North Carolina has built strong ties with local supporters and community-based groups who share their commitment to making reproductive healthcare available to those who are underserved.

Of the seven largest counties in North Carolina, Cumberland County has the highest rate of teenage pregnancy. More than 16 teenage girls per week become pregnant. According to the Alan Guttmacher Institute, 17,500 Cumberland County women and another 17,000 women in surrounding counties, are in need of subsidized family planning services and are not currently being served by public health or community health clinics.

“The women and men of this area deserve high-quality, accessible reproductive healthcare and we’re proud to be able to meet their needs,” said Janet Colm, CEO of Planned Parenthood of Central North Carolina. The new Planned Parenthood health center is accessible by public transportation and will provide comprehensive reproductive healthcare, including abortion services, family planning and prevention of sexually transmitted infections.

“Our core mission is prevention and more than 95% of our services are focused on preventing unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections,” said Colm. She added,  “Women who choose abortion, also deserve compassionate, high-quality care and that’s what Planned Parenthood will provide.”
