Oakland County’s only Planned Parenthood clinic will open in Ferndale next Monday (April 2).

In a press release, Oakland County Commissioner Craig Covey announced the opening.

“I’m so proud that Ferndale will be the home to a new Planned Parenthood Clinic in Oakland County,” Covey said in his press release. “The important health care and counseling/education programs offered by Planned Parenthood are critically important to the residents of Southeast Michigan, and now women and men, including members of the Gay Lesbian Bisexual and Transgender communities will have low cost access to many health care, health promotion and preventative care services right here in Ferndale.”

Representatives from Planned Parenthood are expected to be at tonight’s (Monday, March 26) city council meeting to provide more details of the clinic and its operation.

Planned Parenthood has become increasingly under attack from conservatives across the country, especially for providing abortion information and in some clinics providing abortions.

Covey said the Ferndale clinic will not perform abortions. Covey said he has been working with Planned Parenthood for “a number of  months” on this project.

He said he doubts there will be protests held by conservative groups.

“Most folks realize this is a diverse and open city,” Covey told The Review in a telephone interview.

The exact location of the clinic is 23338 Woodward Ave., a few blocks north of 9 Mile in a vacant medical center.

The Review contacted Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson’s office for comment, but at the time this was posted he has not responded. Patterson has been a firebrand for a number of conservative issues in the past. It’s not known where he stands on Planned Parenthood.

We’ll have more details on this development in the days to come.
