Planned Parenthood of Northeast Ohio (PPNEO) joins Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) to applaud the introduction of the “Preventing Unintended Pregnancies, Reducing the Need for Abortion and Supporting Parents Act” (PUPRNASPA) by Reps. Tim Ryan (D-OH) and Rosa DeLauro (D-CT).

“Planned Parenthood applauds Rep. Tim Ryan and Rep. Rosa DeLauro for proposing commonsense legislation that will help prevent unintended pregnancies and reduce the need for abortion by addressing its root causes,” said PPFA President Cecile Richards. “This legislation will increase access to critically needed affordable contraception, improve health care for low-income women and families, invest in comprehensive, medically accurate sex education, and support women in the choices they make. Simply put, it invests in prevention programs that work.”

“We know firsthand that women and men in the Valley and throughout northeast Ohio need access to basic, preventive health care,” said Tara Broderick, President and CEO of PPNEO. “The economic downturn has hit us hard. Women are struggling to plan their families and stay healthy. We’re committed to serving them at our health centers in Youngstown and Warren.”

Ninety five percent of PPNEO health services focus on primary and preventive care, including contraception, cancer screenings, routine gynecological exams, and testing and treatment for sexually transmitted infections, to ensure women and their families lead healthy and productive lives.

Specifically, the PUPRNASPA includes:

o           Increased support for the nation’s Title X family planning program

o           Expanded coverage of family planning under Medicaid for low-income women

o           Grants for teen pregnancy prevention comprehensive education (encouraging teens to delay sexual activity and providing age-appropriate, factually and medically accurate, and complete contraceptive information for teens)

o           Teen pregnancy prevention incentive grants

o           Grants to encourage creative approaches to teen pregnancy prevention

o           Support for after-school programs
