Ann Arbor — Planned Parenthood Mid and South Michigan is honoring Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday and legacy by collecting feminine hygiene products for women at local domestic violence shelters through February 5th. Donations of items such as sanitary napkins, tampons, soap and body wash will be accepted at Planned Parenthood health centers throughout the state.
The MLK Project ’10 was designed to meet the needs of domestic abuse survivors, while promoting Dr. King’s legacy of nonviolence and service. Lori Lamerand, President of Planned Parenthood Mid & South Michigan, says, “Dr. King embodied what we strive to promote at Planned Parenthood--service and equal access. We believe that, regardless of circumstance or social standing, everyone should have access to quality care--from patient services to the most basic healthcare needs such as feminine hygiene products. These essential Items that we often take for granted can make a world of difference.”
Participation in the project is steadily growing; much like the organization. Planned Parenthood Mid & South Michigan now operates 15 health centers in 22 counties and provides medical services and sexuality education to more than 60,000 people yearly. “I’m honored to take part in this effort and I encourage others to join Planned Parenthood as we honor Dr. King’s legacy of service by providing essential items to women in our community.” says Lamerand.
Planned Parenthood health centers in Ann Arbor, Ann Arbor West, Benton Harbor, Brighton, Burton, Detroit, East Lansing, Flint, Jackson, Lansing, Livonia, Owosso, Saginaw, Warren and Ypsilanti will be gathering donations for neighborhood shelters. Donations may be dropped off at any of the health centers through February 5th.
