FAYETTEVILLE, NC-In honor of National Women’s Health Week, Planned Parenthood of Central North Carolina is giving back to the community which has given them so much. During the month of May, the local non-profit is offering life-saving breast and cervical cancer (PAP) screenings for only $50, a savings of more than $100. This time limited offer is made possible in large part because of financial support the affiliate received earlier this year.

In response to media attention drawn to Planned Parenthood’s potential loss of breast cancer prevention funding, thousands of donors previously unknown to the organization made significant contributions to affiliates across the country. North Carolina was no exception. The Planned Parenthood affiliate in Fayetteville, Planned Parenthood of Central North Carolina, received roughly $20,000 within a within a two week period from almost 500 donors, the vast majority of which had never given to the organization.

“We were simply bowled over by the outpouring of support we received when people heard that Planned Parenthood affiliates might lose vital breast cancer prevention services,” said Paige Johnson, spokeswoman for the local affiliate. She continued, “We thought the best way to show our gratitude would be to provide even greater access to lifesaving cancer screening to the women we serve in North Carolina, starting in our newest health center in Fayetteville.”

Planned Parenthood of Central North Carolina’s Fayetteville Health Center offers a wide range of preventive health services, including lifesaving cancer screenings, birth control, diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases, breast health services, and the HPV vaccine. Bilingual Health Center staff offers confidential services with flexible hours. Appointments are available evenings and weekends, and walk-ins are welcome.

According to the Guttmacher Institute, more than 17,000 Cumberland County women are in need of subsidized family planning services and are not currently being served. In 2010 almost 40% of women over 40 in the county reported not receiving recommended clinical breast exams and mammograms.

“At Planned Parenthood of Central North Carolina, we know firsthand the importance of checkups in preventing more serious health issues,” said Paige Johnson. “Regular exams and health screenings can rule out or detect life-threatening diseases such as breast and cervical cancers and STDs, including HIV. National Women’s Health Week is an excellent opportunity for women to prioritize and take charge of their health.”

The discount offer is valid May 14-May 31 at the Planned Parenthood Fayetteville Health Center on 4551 Yadkin Rd. To schedule an appointment, call 866-942-7762 or visit ppcentralnc.org for more information. Women can also enter to win a free screening at the Fayetteville Health Center by visiting the Mind, Body, Heart & Soul Expo Health Fair on Saturday May 19 at Cross Creek Mall.
