ELLENSBURG — Over 60 eastern Washington supporters of Planned Parenthood will set off in the early morning on Monday, February 1st for Olympia to participate in an annual Reproductive Health and Rights Lobby Day. Over 300 supporters from across the state -- more than 60 of which will be representing Eastern Washington -- are expected to converge on the state capitol to lobby their legislators and attend a rally on the steps of the Capitol Building.

Lobby day participants will be talking to legislators about several vital reproductive health issues being considered during the 2010 legislative session:

•  The current Washington state budget contains a massive cut to low-income family planning services in 2010. Department of Health family planning funding is being slashed by another $3 million on top of the $1 million cut in July 2009. Based on Washington’s birth rate and the number of women who will be affected, the increase in unintended pregnancies is expected to add over $11 million in new state health care costs to the budget within one year.

•  In a recession, the needs of families grow while Washington has fewer resources to help them. Planned Parenthood supports a balanced budget approach including exploring revenue options to ensure that essential human services are not eliminated.

•  Planned Parenthood and our coalition partners have become increasingly concerned about women’s experiences at limited service pregnancy centers. We are supporting legislation aimed at improving accuracy, transparency and privacy at these locations.

A five hour training for Reproductive Health and Rights Lobby Day will be in Ellensburg on January 31st. The training, housing, and travel costs are being provided by Planned Parenthood of Greater Washington and North Idaho (PPGWNI).

On February 1st, activists from eastern Washington will leave Ellensburg at 7:30 a.m. to meet with others at the state capitol to rally and meet with their elected officials.
