Letter to the Editor: Nan Hayworth Votes Against Women, The Journal News, October 13, 2012
U.S. Representative Nan Hayworth can say she’s pro-choice all she wants, but her votes prove otherwise. This self-proclaimed social moderate has waged a full-out war against women’s health and has consistently voted with House Republican leadership.
In fact, her performance has been so abysmal that she earned a 29 percent rating on women’s health issues from the Planned Parenthood Action Fund.
Her opponent’s claims in a recent YouTube ad that she’s “gone Tea Party on us” are right on target. The Congresswoman was elected on promises of fixing the economy and creating jobs. Instead she has spent much of her time trying to roll back decades of progress in women’s issues.
Hayworth voted twice last year to cut off funding for Planned Parenthood, which is used to provide primarily low-income women with birth control, cancer screening and other preventive services. The fact that she is now endorsing state assemblyman Steve Katz, who introduced a bill that would eliminate funding for Planned Parenthood in the New York State budget, should erase any further ambiguity about where she sits when it comes to a woman’s right to basic health care.
Those of us who support women’s health want a representative who doesn’t bend in the winds of politics. If Hayworth wants to call herself a “pro-choice” candidate, then it’s time she stood up and started acting like one.
