Planned Parenthood Greater Memphis Region will offer free rapid HIV testing and prevention counseling at a number of locations next week in recognition of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, which is Sunday, February 7th, was designated to increase awareness of the HIV/AIDS epidemic among African Americans.

Unfortunately, African Americans are disproportionately affected by the epidemic of HIV/AIDS in the United States and here in Shelby County. 87% of the men living with HIV/AIDS in Shelby County are African American, and 92% of the women living with the virus in Shelby County are African American (Source: Memphis and Shelby County Health Department).  It is important for everyone who is sexually active to be tested regularly, whatever their ethnicity.

In recognition of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, PPGMR will provide free rapid HIV testing and prevention counseling at a number of locations, including several local college campuses during the week of February 8-12, 2010. These testing events are open to the public.

Monday, February 8th - Memphis Towers Community Room 4pm - 6pm
Tuesday, February 9th - LeMoyne Owen College Student Center 12pm - 3pm
Wednesday, February 10th - University of Memphis Student Union 10am - 2pm
Wednesday, February 10th - Memphis Gay and Lesbian Community Ctr. 6pm - 9pm

Free HIV counseling and testing provides many benefits to our community. When individuals know how HIV is spread and know their HIV status, they can better protect themselves and their partners. Early and frequent testing for HIV also allows HIV-positive individuals to begin viral suppressive treatments sooner, which can let lead longer and healthier lives.

Free rapid HIV testing is also always available and free at Planned Parenthood's Health Center at 1407 Union Avenue, Suite 300. No appointment is ever needed! Call (901) 725-1717 for information.
