First Lady Michelle Obama announced that a wide array of preventive care services will be covered, free of charge, under new insurance plans. Under the new rules, if you enroll in a new health plan on or after Sept. 23, 2010, the plan must provide recommended preventive care without out-of-pocket costs, like deductibles and co-pays.

What's Covered?
Depending on your health plan and your age, preventive care is expected to include services like:

  • Vaccines for measles, polio, meningitis, and HPV (human papilloma virus)
  • Screening, vaccines, and counseling for healthy pregnancies
  • Well-baby and well-child visits up to the age of 21, as well as vision and hearing, developmental assessments, and body mass index (BMI) screening for obesity
  • Mammograms for women over age 40
  • Pap smears for cervical cancer prevention

It is estimated that by 2013, the new preventive care provisions will help an estimated 88 million Americans get the care they need. Public health providers like PPMNS know that preventive health care helps build stronger, healthier communities by preventing disease before it starts.

This announcement is good news for the health of women and families in Minnesota and across the nation. You can always get the preventive care you need to at PPMNS, no matter your ability to pay. Find a health center near you today and make an appointment to protect your health and your future.
